Das Problem: Die benötigte Energie für die Produktion der Bitcoins stammt oft aus fossilen Quellen, die klimaschädliches CO2
freisetzen. Roger Wattenhofer ist Professor an der ETH Zürich mit Schwerpunkt
auf Verteilte Systeme. Er betreute vor zehn Jahren den ersten Doktoranden weltweit hinsichtlich Bitcoin. «Informationen über Bitcoin-Überweisungen werden in Blöcken zusammengefasst und
in die Blockchain gebaut. Das Energieproblem liegt im «Schürfen» («Mining») bzw.
stromintensiven Herstellen neuer Bitcoins. Für die Erstellung eines einzigen Blocks erhalten Miner eine
Belohnung in Form von Bitcoins, auch Bounty genannt», sagt Wattenhofer.
Bei Bitcoin dürfe einen Block erstellen, wer als Erster ein Krypto-Puzzle löst.
Diese Bounty habe einen Wert von mehreren hunderttausend Franken. Diese Methode wird als «Proof-of-Work» bezeichnet.
Im weiteren Verlauf bedeutet es, dass ein Miner umso grössere Chancen hat,
die Belohnung zu ergattern, je mehr Energie er aufwendet.
«Wenn er alle zehn Minuten einen Block mit einem Wert von 500 000
Fr. produziert, lohnt sich das, solange ihn der Energieaufwand günstiger kommt», erläutert Wattenhofer.
